CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUE FOR VISUAL ARTISTS

HOW IT WORKS

Six artists bring one work or a small series for critique. When the work is discussed, they listen. No explanation, just an opportunity to understand what the work communicates on its own.

Each artist receives about 15 minutes of focused attention. Afterward, they join the conversation and contribute feedback as other artists present.

Two guest reviewers help hold the critique and guide the discussion. A small group of observing artists may also attend and contribute reflections, spoken or written.

Artists leave with clearer insight into how their work is seen, where ideas land, and where they may push further.

WHAT ELSE TO KNOW

This critique format is for visual artists who want feedback that is specific, honest, and useful, without the pressure to over-explain their work.

What to expect:

  • A calm, focused room with clear structure and gentle facilitation

  • A mix of voices, mediums, and experience levels

  • Sessions take place at McColl Center in Uptown Charlotte.

Additional details:

  • Space is limited and reserved for confirmed attendees only.

  • Presenting artists bring, install, and remove their own work. Basic installation tools are available on site.

  • Work is only shown in person and will not be insured while on site.

  • Sessions are audio-recorded for transcription. Presenting artists receive written notes following the program.

  • Written feedback from attendees is delivered to presenting artists anonymously after the session.

  • Themes and takeaways may be shared publicly to benefit the wider arts community. Individual artists and artworks will not be identified.

  • There is no fee to participate. Modest stipends are provided to presenting artists and guest reviewers.
